Ascot Racecourse - News     England    Ascott    Ascot, founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, is the World's most famous Racecourse.  It was while Queen Anne was out riding on the edge of Windsor Great Park that she noticed a natural clearing near the village of East Cote, now called Ascot. Queen Anne ordered her Master of the Buckhounds, The Duke of Somerset, to lay out a course 'for horses to gallop at full stretch' and so the Royal Racecourse was born.  The original course was designed by the Duke and constructed at a cost of some 606 pounds, 17 shillings and 1 pence.  The first day's racing was held on Saturday 11th August 1711 and the second on Monday 13th August when horses competed for The Queen's Plate worth £100.  In 1714 racing was cancelled following the death of Queen Anne. Subsequently there was only one more day's racing before the course was closed until 1744. The Duke of Cumberland then revived Ascot and, in June 1768, the first four-day meeting was held and has continued to the present day.  Today Ascot stages 24 days of top class racing each year. Royal Ascot in June is an international occasion of fashion and style and the four days of racing are the finest anywhere in the World. Britain's most popular race meeting welcomes over 230,000 people annually. The highlight of each day is the Royal Procession before racing.

Hipodromo El Comandante    Puerto Rico    El Comandante Race Track - Overview  El Comandante is one of the fastest-growing racing entities in the world, with the unique achievement of having nearly doubled its handle and purse structure from 1991 to 1993, when most race tracks were suffering set-backs in their handles. The total handle for 1996 exceeded $234 million, a dramatic increase over the $128 million wagered in 1991.   According to information published in The Daily Racing Form, El Comandante repeatedly ranks among the first fifteen racetracks in the United States and Canada in terms of handle. The "handle" is the total amount wagered on any race day.   The purse structure at El Comandante also reflects its position as the foremost racing facility in the Caribbean and an industry leader in the hemisphere. During 1997, El Comandante paid over US$26.9 million in purses.   At the heart of this success story lies the modernization of off-track betting facilities (O.T.B.'s) carried out by El Comandante beginning in November, 1991. The new on-line betting system (SEA Hípico Sistema Electrónico de Apuestas) allows bettors to place their wagers with the same timing of the racetrack. The system has evolved to include over 675 such outlets with much room for continued expansion.   Also, the bettors are now able to enjoy the spectacle of live racing from their own homes or the neighborhood OTB over a local UHF television channel, and / or local cable TV.  Location & Racing Dates   El Comandante, Puerto Rico's only racetrack, rests nestled in a valley with the peaks of El Yunque National Rain Forest providing a spectacular backdrop. Located on Road #3, the 257-acre facility lies just 12 miles east of San Juan and the Condado, Isla Verde tourist zones and the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.  Benefiting from the island's tropical climate, El Comandante is open year-round with races every day, except Tuesdays and Saturdays. Post time varies from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m., according to season. No races take place on Thursday or Friday of Holy Week.    The track itself is a one-mile dirt oval, with one chute for races at seven furlongs. The length of the stretch is 900 feet. One-turn races cover distances from five to seven furlongs. Races around two turns are contested from 1-1/16 to 1-3/16 miles. The width of the stretch is 85 feet, and the width of the backstretch is 75 feet.  The Grandstand and Clubhouse, a six-level structure, seat up to 11,000 spectators. Admission to all areas, including ample parking is free of charge.  Betting Information  El Comandante's seven to nine-race program offers, aside from win and place betting, five "exactas", three daily doubles, and one "Quiniela". In 1997, a "Pick 3" and a "trifecta" were added to the ample betting menu.  The 2nd through 7th races form the Pick Six. With each combination costing just 25 cents and the potential winnings surpassing $1,000,000. El Comandante's Pick Six is the "people's bet" per excellence. El Comandante's unique carryover, on which the National Pick-7 was patterned, awards the carryover amount only when one bettor picks all six winners. In the last three years, five fortunate bettors became instant millionaires after hitting the Pick Six in "solo" fashion. The size of the two wagers reflects the advantages of El Comandante's Pick Six method. One "solo" winner had 80 combinations at a cost of $20, while the other had but eight combinations for a $2 wager ... (in the latter case, the bettor made her selections based on which horses' names she liked the most!). In July, 1997, a lucky bettor carried a $1.7 million dollars prize, the largest amount ever paid in local horse racing history, with a $1.30 wager. The winner just chose as his selection the recommendations offered in a general circulation newspaper!

The official Rose of Tralee International Festival    Ireland    When one reflects on the fact that the Rose of Tralee International Festival Predates The Beatles, radio Telefis Eireann, The Late Late Show and Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, one is forced to the inevitable conclusion that there is something special about the universal appeal and popularity of this great festival.  Its primary appeal must be in the manner in which it celebrates Irish Culture and tradition through its worldwide network of Irish Centers. The bringing together of this International gathering of successful and vibrant young people is a celebration of the undoubted contribution of Irish Culture throughout the world.   Another great attribute of the festival has been its capacity to develop and change. The first steps were taken with 5 Roses and the Millstreet Pipe Band (still with the Festival) on the tarmac at Shannon Airport when Passports were issued to the 'Roses' at Feale Bridge in order to enter 'The kingdom'. The innovation of Street Entertainment, the Festival Dome, (later blown down), the new Dome, Birds Amusements, Fossetts Circus. The numerous artistes who made their debut at the festival later to go on to International fame. The advent of television and Gay Byrne. According to last years TAM ratings the Festival is as popular as ever with the viewers. It is also a tribute to our sponsors that they have continued to support us over these last 40 years. Our plans are already at an advanced stage for a big bang for the 40th year and then it's off again to the millennium and beyond.  Seamus O'Halloran  President  Festival of Kerry  1998
